Good morning, Cookeville.
Mid-October and I'm still running the AC like it's July (somebody tell the thermometer what month it is). Real fall weather is supposedly rolling in next week, and I've got my flannel ready by the door. Until then, stay cool and stay curious!
In today's Cookeville Scoop:
Cumberland Auto Center's 12th Annual Trunk or Treat (the big family night on Thursday)
A library science spectacular plus a free Depot lunch concert
Pet of the Week: NOVA at the Putnam County shelter
Let's get into it.

TO DOS
Tai Chi Workshop - Ease into Wednesday afternoon with Teddy Spivey's gentle Tai Chi at Cane Creek Recreation Center (180 CC Camp Rd), 4 to 5 PM. It's a low-impact "meditation in motion" that works for most ages and fitness levels, and the class runs as a $32 four-week session. Register through City of Cookeville Leisure Services if you've been meaning to start. Details and registration.
Fifth Bay Storage Ribbon Cutting - Thursday at 2 PM, the Chamber cuts the ribbon at 9888 Roberts Road in Silver Point. Fifth Bay sells deeded storage condos you can own and customize (about 525 to 1,000 square feet), with app-controlled doors. If you've been hunting for serious storage (or just love a good grand opening), this one's free to attend. Chamber calendar.
Fall All Sports Camp (final days) - Coach Amy Underwood wraps the Fall All Sports Camp for ages 7–12 at Cane Creek Gym through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM daily, with early drop-off and late pick-up available. [VERIFY: current registration fee on ActiveKids]. Call Cane Creek at 931-526-9767 if you're still scrambling for daytime coverage. Camp info.

RESTAURANTS
Irrationale Kitchen+Taps is feeding the midweek well. Wednesday's board stacks $1 wings (sold in quantities of 5), a $15 "Girl Dinner," $9 fried green tomatoes with pretzel and cheese, and 2-for-1 domestic drafts. Thursday flips to Break the Chains Burgsday: an $11 cheeseburger with fries and a fountain drink (no subs), still with those 2-for-1 drafts. Hours posted 11 AM to 9 PM. See the specials.
Pooky Jane's Kitchen and Pub keeps Happy Hour simple and useful: $1 off beer, house wine, and well liquors every Wednesday through Friday from 3 to 7 PM. Perfect bridge between work and whatever costume fittings you've got planned. Specials.
The Putnam Room pours Whiskey Wednesdays from 5 to 9 PM with half off whiskey, bourbon, and Scotch. Downtown date-night energy without the weekend crowds! Specials.

CUMBERLAND'S 12TH ANNUAL TRUNK OR TREAT
Thursday night is when Cookeville's candy calendar officially tips into high season.
Cumberland Auto Center hosts its 12th Annual Trunk or Treat on Thursday, October 15, from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at 1540 Interstate Drive. Admission is FREE. They simply ask each family to bring a non-perishable food item so the haul can help neighbors here at home. Dealer pages also point Fast Pass donations toward Genesis House supplies (dish soap, hygiene products, baby wipes, laundry detergent, paper goods, and cleaning basics). Fast Passes are optional if you want to skip the donation line; drop donations at Overdrive USA and ask for Ryan or Tina before the cutoff noted on their site.
Picture the lot after dusk: decorated trunks in a long candy loop, bounce houses for the sugar-high set, costume contests, and enough music to feel like a block party that somehow parked itself at a dealership. It's one of those events where you see half the town, your kid's entire preschool class, and at least one adult in a full onesie who insists they "just came for the candy." (Respect.)
Twelve years is a long run for a free family night. That streak means volunteers, trunk vendors, sponsors, and a community that keeps showing up with costumes and cans. If you're new to Cookeville, this is an easy first tradition. If you've been coming since year one, you already know the drill: charge the phone for costume photos, pack a sweater for the kids when they melt down after the third bounce house, and leave room in the trunk for whatever you collect.
Questions? Call Ryan at 931-520-4128. Mark Thursday, pull the costumes out of the closet, and I'll see you under the lot lights!

IN OTHER NEWS
City leaders are lining up land and easements so TDOT can finally build a northbound left-turn lane on South Willow Avenue at Lee Seminary Road. City Manager James Mills put the property price around $35,538.40 plus closing costs, noting traffic has stacked up since Park View Elementary opened and that TDOT's design is already done. If you've ever sat through that morning backup past the old Bennett Industries stretch, you know why this matters.
Some turns on Willow take longer than a Target run. This one's meant to fix that.

Strong Paws' Dogs at the Depot: Halloween Fit Dog Frenzy meets Friday at 7 PM at the Cookeville Train Depot (meetup only; not a Depot partnership). Dress up yourself and your dog, pack a flashlight or glow gear, and hunt hidden pumpkins with canine fitness and trick challenges along a downtown loop. [VERIFY: admission cost / RSVP]. Thanks for reading and for showing up for this town, whether that's with a can of soup at Trunk or Treat or a quiet Wednesday at the library. Enjoy the warm stretch, then the cool Friday air. See you next time. 🧡
