Good morning, Cookeville.

Late July is handing the keys to August this weekend, but it is not leaving quietly. The market tables are still in full summer form, used books are waiting for new shelves, and the fair pageants have three days of their own on the calendar.

In today's Cookeville Scoop:

  • The pageant schedule from Preteen Miss to Saturday's youngest divisions

  • Three final chances to vote early in Putnam County

  • A Monterey blood drive and a newly renovated Baxter travel stop

  • Free balance classes, the Green Market, two book sales, and Saturday karaoke

Let's get into it.

TO DOS

Use the final three days of early voting. The Putnam County Election Commission is open Thursday from 8 AM to 7 PM, Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM. All early voting is at 705 County Services Drive. Bring an accepted Tennessee or federal government-issued photo ID. A college photo ID does not qualify. Check sample ballots and voting details.

Donate blood Thursday in Monterey. The American Red Cross blood drive runs July 30 from noon to 4 PM at the Putnam County Library Monterey branch, 401 E Commercial Avenue. The library listing invites eligible donors to stop by, but it does not state whether appointments are required or how many spaces remain. See the Monterey branch calendar.

See the newly renovated Love's Travel Stop in Baxter. The chamber's ribbon cutting is Thursday from 2 to 2:30 PM at 110 Fast Lane. This is a top-to-bottom refresh, not a new location. Updates include the sales floor, public restrooms and showers, the exterior, and back-of-house space for employees. Find it on the Chamber calendar.

RESTAURANTS

Outback's Jawssie Takeover ends Thursday. The Cookeville location is wrapping its shark-themed bar event July 30 from 4 to 6 PM. Aussie-tizers are 50% off during the event, and the offer is dine-in only. It is a very specific two-hour answer to the question, “What if dinner needed more fins?” Outback is at 1390 Interstate Drive. Check the Cookeville location page.

This section is short on purpose. The only other verified last-call menu was one we have already covered, and leftovers belong on a plate, not in the newsletter.

FROM INFANT MISS TO FAIREST OF THE FAIR

The 2026 Putnam County Fair Pageants begin Thursday and take the long route through Saturday, moving from older youth divisions to adults and then through the youngest contestants. Registration closed July 24, so this is the spectator schedule, not a last-minute entry reminder.

Thursday starts at the Putnam County Convention Center with Preteen Miss at 6 PM, Teen Miss at 7 PM, and Fairest of the Fair at 8 PM.

Friday keeps the same hourly rhythm. Senior Ms. begins at 6 PM, followed by Ms. Elite at 7 PM and Ms. at 8 PM.

Saturday is the full afternoon. Junior Miss starts at 1 PM, then the schedule advances every half hour through Young Miss, Little Miss, Mini Miss, Tiny Miss, Toddler Miss, Baby Miss, and Infant Miss. The boys divisions for ages 0 through 6 begin at 5 PM. The fair notes that age on pageant day determines each division.

Several titles also come with work after the applause. Preteen Miss, Teen Miss, and Fairest of the Fair have appearances throughout the fair and at other points during the year. Junior Miss and the adult division winners have at least two appearance days during the fair.

Fairest of the Fair carries the largest stated education award, a $1,000 scholarship paid directly to a college or trade school after the winner completes the fair duties, state pageant, and academic requirements listed by the fair.

All three days are at the Putnam County Convention Center, 2121 Event Center Drive. The official page does not publish a spectator admission price, so check the fair's page before you go for any updates. See the complete pageant schedule.

HAPPENINGS

Here are four more ways to build the weekend, from a Thursday morning class to a Saturday night microphone.

Moving for Better Balance. Thursday at Cane Creek Recreation Center, 180 C C Camp Road. The free beginner class runs from 9 to 10 AM, followed by an intermediate session from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. The low-impact program focuses on balance, stability, mobility, and fall prevention. Registration requirements are not listed. See the City calendar.

Cookeville Green Market. Saturday from 8 AM to noon at 310 Newman Drive. This producer-only market lists seasonal vegetables, cut flowers, meats, honey, jams, crafts, dairy products, and woodworking among its usual offerings. Inventory changes with the vendors, which is half the point of showing up early. It is free to browse. Check the state market listing.

Two first-Saturday book sales. The Twice-Told Book Sale at the Cookeville library and the Friends sale at the Monterey branch both run Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM. Most Cookeville items are $3 or less; Monterey prices are not listed. Choose Cookeville at 50 E Broad Street or Monterey at 401 E Commercial Avenue.

Roasted Karaoke. Saturday from 7 to 11 PM at Roasted, 1068 E 10th Street, Suite F. Sound Boy hosts the four-hour session. The event page does not list an admission price or age requirement, so check the venue before making it the night's final stop. See the venue schedule.

If this issue saved you a search, forward it to the person who needs Saturday's final voting hours, knows someone eligible to donate blood, or would happily spend a morning moving from produce to used books. I am especially receptive to tips that arrive with their homework already attached.

Thank you for spending the turn from July into August with me. May your market bag be sturdy, your used book be a keeper, and your Saturday plans leave a little room to breathe. 🧡
