August 6-9, 2026
Good morning, Cookeville.
The first full August weekend starts early and stays out late. Saturday morning has running shoes on North Jefferson, then the day moves through museum trivia, library games, and the last glow of the fair midway. Sunday offers a softer landing, preferably involving a bagel.
In today's Cookeville Scoop:
A community race with room for runners, walkers, kids, and committed sleepers
The Putnam County Fair's final three nights
Two Friday bookshop stops and two practical local food plans
Library programs, a free History Hike, comedy, and a four-act roots show
Let's get into it.

TO DOS
Take a writing break at Plenty. Friday's monthly Writers Workshop runs from 11 AM to 12:15 PM at PLENTY Downtown Bookshop, 41 W Broad Street. A Tennessee Tech faculty member or another local author leads the craft session, and all skill levels are welcome. A ticket is required and includes a drink from The Neighborhood Cafe, but the accessible listing does not show the price. Check the workshop page.
Save a seat for an author conversation. Plenty also hosts Lauren Nossett in conversation with Rea Frey Friday from 5 to 6:30 PM at the same downtown shop. The organizer offers an RSVP link but does not list a price on the accessible page. See the event listing and RSVP.
Choose your Great Chase Race lane. Saturday's kids' mile starts at 7:30 AM and the walking-friendly 5K begins at 8 AM at 849 N Jefferson Avenue. Listed prices, including processing fees, are $16.90 for the kids' run, $38.10 for the 5K, and $27.50 for the wonderfully honest Sleeping But Supporting option. Compare the registration choices.

RESTAURANTS
Stroud's Barbeque has the Thursday-and-Friday lunch-or-dinner decision covered. Thursday's barbecue baked potato is $10.99, and Friday's barbecue nachos are $10.99. The official menu lists both specialties at $13.99 outside the daily deal. The Cookeville location is at 1201 E Spring Street and is open 10:30 AM to 8 PM both days. See Stroud's daily specials.
Meg's Bread gives the weekend two distinct windows at 52 S Cedar Avenue: pizza Saturday from 11 AM to 2 PM, then bagel brunch Sunday from 9 AM to 2 PM. Exact rotating toppings and prices are not published on the schedule page, which adds a little mystery to breakfast without requiring detective work. Check the weekly lunch schedule.

THE GREAT CHASE RACE BUILDS A BRIDGE
Saturday morning's Great Chase Race has a lane for the quick, the steady, the small, and the people whose strongest athletic event is supporting a good cause from bed. That range is part of what makes this one more than a standard 5K.
The kids' 1-mile fun run begins at 7:30 AM, followed by the 5K from 8 to 10 AM at 849 N Jefferson Avenue. The organizer describes the 5K as walking friendly and frames the race as a chance to chase down some of Cookeville's strongest runners. It does not publish enough detail to turn that idea into a rulebook, so the practical takeaway is simple: runners and walkers are both welcome.
Registration is $38.10 for the 5K and $16.90 for the kids' run, with processing fees included in those listed prices. If Saturday morning motion is not in the cards, the $27.50 Sleeping But Supporting option lets you help without pretending you were about to set an alarm.
Every dollar of race proceeds benefits El Puente Hispanic Community Center. El Puente says its work builds bridges of language, culture, resources, and connection in the Upper Cumberland through education, advocacy, and community engagement. This year's race has a $15,000 fundraising goal to help expand those services and respond to growing community needs.
That gives the chase a second finish line. One is the end of the course. The other is a more connected Cookeville, built by people who run, walk, volunteer, donate, or select the finest registration category ever named. Read the race details and register.

HAPPENINGS
Here are five more ways to use the weekend, from a final lap around the fairgrounds to a free walk through local history.

Friday pairs Back Roads Band at 5:30 PM with the Hedrick Rodeo at 7 PM. Saturday has a 10 AM pet show, horse and beef events, and a 7 PM demolition derby. Friday and Saturday armbands are $30, and the midway closes at 11 PM. Open the official schedule.
Bomb Shelter Comedy Open Mic. Thursday at Roasted, 1068 E 10th Street, Suite F, starts with music bingo at 7 PM before comedy runs from 9 to 10:30 PM. Open-mic signup is open to anyone, with five minutes on stage per performer. The listing does not state a cover price or age requirement. See the venue calendar.
Cookeville Library's Friday lineup. At 50 E Broad Street, Read, Play, Grow starts at 10 AM for children from birth to age 3. Spider-Man: No Way Home screens from noon to 3 PM, then ages 13 and older can enter a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament from 3:30 to 5 PM. The listings do not state prices or registration requirements. Browse Friday's events.
History Hike: Declaration Discovery. Start at either the Cookeville Depot Museum or Cookeville History Museum Saturday between 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM, then answer trivia along Broad Street. August's theme connects America's 250th anniversary with the Declaration of Independence. The walk is free; return your form by 3:30 PM for the prize drawing. Get the city details.
Jade Arrow and the Archers. Saturday from 8 to 10 PM at Roasted, Jade Arrow and the Archers lead a $10 bill with Eagle Eye Eli, Alan Benest of the Fumblebuckers, and River of Ash. The night spans Americana, folk, punk, and roots music. The accessible listing does not state an age requirement. See the full lineup.
If this issue gave you one useful plan, forward it to the runner, writer, fair regular, library gamer, history walker, music fan, or Sunday-bagel person who needs it. Know about a restaurant change, community class, school-year event, fundraiser, or small local story we should catch next? Reply with the exact link and send it my way. Good tips save everyone a few laps.
Thank you for spending the first full August weekend with me. I hope yours has one good early start, one bright fairground night, and a Sunday soft enough to recover from both. Save me a bagel. 🧡
