Good morning, Cookeville.
The air finally remembered it's October (my flannel stopped looking like a costume). This weekend's the last stretch of Putnam fall break, and the fairgrounds are about to smell like kettle corn and costume hairspray. I'm leaning all the way in.
In today's Cookeville Scoop:
Pumpkin Fest at the fairgrounds (a free Saturday that can eat your whole afternoon, gladly)
A four-course Greek dinner downtown plus a packed library Friday
Date Spot: Fire & Vine above First Street
Let's get into it.

TO DOS
Food Around the World – Greece - Friday from 6 to 8 PM at Jamie's Eats and Sweets (50 W Broad St), Jamie hosts a four-course Greek dinner with stories from her time abroad and recipes from a Greek chef friend. It's ticketed table energy, not a grab-and-go lunch. Grab tickets on the event page before the seats fill. Get tickets.
Fall 2026 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament - Saturday at West End Park (609 West End St) with Men's 18–29, Men's 30+, and Co-Ed 18+ divisions. Games run to 21 (1s and 2s) or a 20-minute cap, then pool play seeds a single-elimination bracket. Call Cane Creek Gymnasium at 931-520-5767 for the registration fee and time if you're rounding up a team. Tournament info.
Fall All Sports Camp (final day) - Coach Amy Underwood wraps the Fall All Sports Camp for ages 7–12 at Cane Creek Gym on Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM, with early drop-off and late pick-up available. Call Cane Creek at 931-526-9767 if you're still covering that last fall-break Friday. Camp info.

RESTAURANTS
Irrationale Kitchen+Taps is running a proper weekend board. Saturday and Sunday bring brunch selections from 10 AM to 2 PM, plus $1 wings (sold in quantities of 5), 2-for-1 domestic drafts, $5 Bloody Marys and mimosas, and a $30 table mimosa. Sunday hours are posted 10 AM to 8 PM. Perfect recovery fuel after a fairgrounds afternoon. See the specials.
Pooky Jane's Kitchen and Pub keeps Friday Happy Hour simple: $1 off beer, house wine, and well liquors from 3 to 7 PM. Ideal bridge between work and whatever costume fittings you've still got planned. Specials.
The Putnam Room pours happy hour from 4 to 5:30 PM through the week, then adds a late-night happy hour on Saturdays from 8 to 10 PM. They're open Saturday 4 to 10 PM and closed Sunday. Downtown date-night energy without inventing a reservation panic. Call 931-644-3722 if you want a table locked in. Hours and specials.

PUMPKIN FEST AT THE FAIRGROUNDS
Saturday is when Cookeville's fall calendar stops hinting and just goes for it.
Pumpkin Fest takes over the Putnam County Fairgrounds (155 Fairground Street) on Saturday, October 17, from noon to 9 PM. Admission is FREE. Parking is FREE. It's rain or shine, with vendors set up indoors and outdoors, which is the kind of plan that respects a Tennessee October.
Picture a full fairgrounds day: local makers and food trucks, face painting, kid-friendly zones, Halloween decorations that make the whole place feel like October on purpose, and a kids costume contest with a prize. From 5 to 7 PM, Trunk or Treat rolls through so the little ones can do the candy circuit without inventing a new route across town. Bring layers. The high's only in the upper 50s, and 9 PM at the fairgrounds is jacket weather even if the bounce-house line feels tropical.
This is the easy "put it on the family calendar" event of the weekend. No ticket maze. No guessing whether it's worth the drive. You show up, you wander, you eat something fried (or you don't, I won't judge), and you leave with at least one photo of a kid in a costume that looked better in the living room. Organizers Family Ties Events built it for exactly that kind of day.
If you've been waiting for a reason to use the fairgrounds parking lot again, this is it. I'll be the one comparing funnel-cake strategies and pretending I'm "just browsing" the vendor tents.

IN OTHER NEWS
City leaders are looking at buying four more Currux Vision AI "intersection detection" cameras, the same system Cookeville's been adding for three years. Public Works Director Mary Beth Elrod told council the city already has 10 in the network and wants two more along the Bunker Hill / I-40 eastbound stretch, plus two at Spring Street and Broad Street to help cover more of the Willow corridor. If you've sat through a Willow light cycle that felt like a short film, you understand the pitch.
Some intersections need a smarter stare. This purchase is meant to help.

DATE SPOT
This weekend's date pick is Fire & Vine at 115 W 1st Street. Rooftop tables, stone-fired plates, and that "we actually left the house" feeling without needing a Nashville drive. They're open Friday and Saturday 10:30 AM to 10 PM and Sunday 10:30 AM to 9 PM, so you can do brunch, dinner, or both if the pumpkin sugar crash demands a reboot.
It's locally owned, downtown, and built for lingering. Call (931) 559-8463 if you want a table with a view instead of a "is this booth free?" gamble.

WEATHER
Friday 70 / 45 | 35% rain
Saturday 58 / 38 | 17% rain
Sunday 68 / 35 | 3% rain
Pack a jacket for Saturday night at the fairgrounds.
