Good morning, Cookeville.

Parents, that's five more school mornings until fall break. If the countdown needs some help, this week has a new smoothie drive-thru on West Jackson, Statemint's charity presale Tuesday night, and a free exhibit on Broad Street about a Cookeville school built in 1928. Bring a jacket for drop-off, and plan on leaving it in the car by Wednesday.

Statemint's charity presale is Tuesday night. The fall pop-up consignment sale lets early shoppers in from 5 to 8 PM at the Putnam County Convention Center, 2121 Event Center Drive. Tickets are $10, or $5 for teachers and healthcare workers, and every ticket dollar goes to The Magnolia Foundation. Can't make Tuesday? Entius cuts the ribbon Tuesday morning. The Chamber is celebrating this Cookeville talent solutions company from 10 to 10:30 AM at 625 Neal Street, Suite 103. Entius handles recruiting, direct hire, and talent consulting for organizations across the country, so if you're hiring (or you just want to meet the people who are), it's a half hour well spent. Learn some self-defense Wednesday evening. Leisure Services has a two-hour class with Sensei West, a 3rd Dan in Tracy Kenpo, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in Dance Studio A at Cane Creek Recreation Center. It's $20 for ages 15 and up, and you don't need any special strength or flexibility. Wear loose, comfortable clothes. Sign up through the city's ACTIVE page. Register here.

Ruck Fit is $3 on Tuesday. Sandbags, bodyweight moves, and one honest hour from 5:30 to 6:30 PM at Cane Creek Recreation Center, 180 C C Camp Road. The Chamber listing says it scales to any fitness level and calls it low-impact, which I've decided to take at its word. Pay at the door. It runs every Tuesday. Class details.

Fil-Thai Sunshine Smoothies opens today. The owners behind the Fil-Thai restaurants and food truck have a new spot at 148 West Jackson Street, and the menu leans cold and bright: acai bowls, smoothies, yogurt parfaits, and refreshers, plus paninis if you want something to chew on. There's a drive-thru, too! The Chamber cuts the ribbon at 11 AM and promises lunch and smoothie samples. Hours and prices aren't posted yet. Grand opening details.

Crawdaddy's weekday board is on repeat. Monday is Tito's for $4.99, Tuesday every draft is half price, and Wednesday is the Aperol Spritz. Specials run 11 AM to 10 PM at 53 W Broad Street. It's the same lineup as last Monday, and I haven't heard a single complaint. See the specials.

In 1928, Cookeville built a school for its Black students with money from the local community and a grant from the Julius Rosenwald Fund. It became Darwin School, which taught students from Putnam and the surrounding counties until it burned in January 1963.

That story is part of "Building a Bright Future: Black Communities and Rosenwald Schools in Tennessee," now up at the Cookeville History Museum through November 20. The Tennessee State Museum exhibit uses five two-sided panels to follow alumni and community members from 16 of the state's 354 Rosenwald Schools, from Reconstruction to today.

The museum is at 40 E Broad Street, open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM, and it's free. It's closed Mondays, so tomorrow is your first shot. Five panels fit in a lunch break. See the museum's hours.

Putnam County students are out Saturday, October 3, through Sunday, October 18, and head back Monday, October 19. That's 16 days to fill, so here are a few highlights from our fall break guide:

Target and Home Depot say they're nearly fully staffed ahead of their October openings at the Willows. Chamber President Amy New told The UC Now that Tennessee Tech gives the area plenty of workers, and that few people are leaving other local stores for the new jobs. Home Depot opens October 8, and Target opens October 11. The Chamber plans a campaign later this year to steer those shoppers toward small businesses, too.

Target is staffed. Now the Chamber wants downtown to stay on target.

Thrift Bingo makes Wednesday a secondhand day. From 2 to 3 PM at the Cookeville library, 50 E Broad Street, the prizes are donated vintage, retro, and secondhand treasures, with a special grand prize in the final round. Free. Ava is listed as a 2-year, 6-month-old female Old English Sheepdog at the Cookeville-Putnam County Animal Shelter, Pet ID A013438. She's white with gray, in the large size range (61 to 100 pounds), and her listing went up three days ago. That's everything the shelter has posted, so the rest you'll have to learn in person! Dogs 5 months and older are $170, which covers spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchip, and heartworm testing. Cash or check only.
