Good morning, Cookeville.

My kid's costume has officially moved from "in progress" to "needs a glue gun tonight." I've also started the annual candy math, where I buy two bags for the door and somehow need a third by Saturday.

In today's Cookeville Scoop:

  • Your free Halloween afternoon downtown, from a silent disco to the Treat Trail

  • The Ultimate Halloween Roundup: nearly 40 trunk-or-treats, haunts, and parties across the Upper Cumberland

  • What's Free: every no-cost way to fill a candy bag this weekend

Let's get into it.

TO DOS

Bands of America Middle Tennessee Regional - Thirty-eight high school marching bands from nine states compete at Tucker Stadium (1105 N Peachtree Ave). Friday's prelims run 7 to 9:15 PM. Saturday's prelims start at 7:15 AM, Tech's Golden Eagle Marching Band plays an exhibition at 4, and the top 12 bands march in finals from 7 to 10:30 PM. Adult tickets start at $30 plus fees online, and it's cashless with a clear bag policy. Get tickets.

The Blackout Bash - Leslie Town Centre's Estes Williams Room (1 W First St) goes blacklight Friday from 8 PM to midnight, with a live DJ, a photo booth, finger foods, a hosted bar, and a $500 best-costume prize. It's 21+ and advance tickets only ($28 early bird, $35 general, $45 VIP). Tickets here.

Halloween Dance Party - The Cookeville Community Center (240 Carlen Dr) turns its gym floor into a costume dance party Saturday night. The cover is $10. Costume optional, dancing encouraged, and it wraps up early enough to make a second party after. Event details.

Rave to Your Grave - Roasted (1068 E 10th St) keeps Halloween going late with DJ PHXNX from 10 PM Saturday to 2 AM. It's BYOB and 21+. Advance tickets are $5 (only 60, and sales close at noon Saturday), then it's $15 at the door if there's room. Get tickets.

RESTAURANTS

Father Tom's Pub is leaning all the way into spooky season. The Halloween board brings the Rocky Horror Poutine Show (garlic-breaded cheese curds and curry gravy over thick-cut potatoes) and the Voodoo Fredo at dinner. Save room for the Cinnamon Roll Churros, filled with cream cheese, dusted in cinnamon sugar, and served with whiskey salted caramel and blackberry Grand Marnier dips (while supplies last). Open 11 AM to 11:30 PM Friday and Saturday at 32 N Cedar Ave. See the specials.

Outback Steakhouse closes out Child Advocacy Awareness Week on Friday. Eat at 1390 Interstate Dr, and part of the day's sales go to the Upper Cumberland Child Advocacy Center and the Family Resource Center of Putnam County. A Bloomin' Onion before trick-or-treat counts as a plan. Event listing.

YOUR HALLOWEEN AFTERNOON, MAPPED OUT

Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, and downtown Cookeville has the whole afternoon covered. Two free stops, a few blocks apart, and you can be home with the porch light on before dark.

Stop one is the Cookeville Depot Museum (116 W Broad St) for the Spooky Season Celebration from 2 to 3 PM. Leisure Services is setting up a silent disco, so picture a train depot full of tiny vampires dancing to music only they can hear (I fully plan to join in). There are spooky stories, games and activities that "test your bravery," and treats for everyone who shows up in costume. It's free.

Stop two is the main event. The Cookeville Treat Trail winds through Dogwood Park (30 E Broad St) from 4 to 6 PM. Hip Cookeville and the city's Leisure Services team line the park paths with booths from local businesses and organizations, and each one has committed to handing out at least 4,000 pieces of candy or treats. That's a lot of fun-size! Along the way, there are games, live performances, and themed photo spots.

Here's why it matters. For families who live outside city limits or on rural roads where houses are far apart, the Treat Trail is the easiest trick-or-treating in the county. Everyone gets the same safe, walkable route.

A few practical notes. Costumed trick-or-treaters must be 12 or under. Get in line inside the park by 5:30 PM to make sure you get through, and know that it ends at 6 or when the candy runs out, whichever comes first. It happens rain or shine, but Saturday afternoon looks dry and warm (77 degrees), with showers not expected until late that night. Park a few blocks out and walk in.

Still have energy (and bag space) after 6? Scroll down. The roundup below has trunk-or-treats, haunts, and parties from Sparta to Byrdstown, plus a whole section of free ones.

Grab the glue gun, finish the costume, and we'll see you on the trail!
