Good morning, Cookeville.

Late August has a particular change-of-shift feeling around town: purple shirts are back on campus, restaurant boards have turned over again, and the final summer concert is waiting on Thursday's calendar. This short edition has plenty packed into three days.

In today's Cookeville Scoop:

  • Bowling World marks 43 years with a reopening weekend and a local fundraiser

  • A free farm-to-table cooking class and two remaining CPAC performances

  • New weekly plates at Father Tom's and a look at Bravo's lunch board

  • Tennessee Tech's first day back and Sleep Nation at Dogwood Park

Let's get into it.

TO DOS

Reserve a Bowling World clinic before Wednesday's price cutoff. The professional-led clinics run Friday and Saturday, with sessions on lane play and ball motion, the physical game, two-handed bowling, and a youth clinic. Each is limited to 16 people and costs $59.99 through Aug. 19, then $65. Call or visit Bowling World, 545 Neal Street, to check availability. See the full clinic schedule and contact details.

Register for a free farm-to-table cooking class. The Putnam County Health Department hosts this one-hour class Thursday from 11 AM to noon at 701 County Services Drive. A registered dietitian will cover building balanced farm-to-table meals. The class is free, but registration goes through the organizer's ticket page. Reserve a place through the Community Cooking Class listing.

RESTAURANTS

Father Tom's Pub has two new entries on its “This Week” board. The Harmacy Hot Quesadilla brings spiced white cheddar, salsa made with Harmacy Smoke Signal, and crema made with Harmacy Cinco. The Garlic Truffle Filet pairs a four-ounce petite filet with compound butter, shoestring fries, and white-cheddar mac and cheese finished with gremolata. The filet is available after 3:30 PM. Weekly-item prices are not posted. See the current board.

Bravo Cafe & Grill has a lunch board that makes room for several appetites and budgets. Published specials range from an $8.95 chicken-salad platter or one pork chop with two sides to a $13.79 Sicilian combo, with chicken, pasta, fish, and vegetable options between them. Specials are served after 10 AM at 514 N Willow Avenue, and Bravo is open until 2 PM. Browse the lunch specials.

BOWLING WORLD'S REOPENING HAS MORE THAN ONE WAY TO MAKE AN IMPACT

A 43rd anniversary could be cake, balloons, and a polite round of applause. Bowling World is going a little bigger.

Its anniversary and grand-reopening celebration starts Thursday, Aug. 20, at 2 PM and continues through Sunday at 545 Neal Street. The weekend brings professional instruction, exhibition games, two pro-am events, and a silent auction. It also raises money for the Putnam County YMCA's GO PINK Breast Cancer Recovery Program, giving the celebration a purpose beyond checking whether your old bowling shoes still fit.

The first useful deadline arrives before the doors officially reopen. Bowling World's Learn With the Pros clinics cost $59.99 per person through Wednesday, Aug. 19, then rise to $65. Each clinic is limited to 16 participants, so contact the center rather than assuming a lane is waiting.

Friday's three clinics run from 1 to 4 PM and cover lane play and ball motion with Bob Learn Jr., the physical game with Amleto Monacelli, and two-handed bowling with Kyle Troup. Saturday's 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM block includes a youth clinic with Learn and Monacelli plus another two-handed session with Troup.

The competition starts Friday at 6:30 PM with a pro-am series. A second pro-am begins Saturday at 5 PM, and the silent auction runs from 4 to 6 PM. Bowling costs $25 per person, per series. Non-bowling spectators pay $5, and the center recommends arriving early for the professionals' exhibition games. The announced lineup also includes Adam Barta.

That gives you several ways into the weekend: learn something, bowl beside a pro, watch from the seats, or support the fundraiser through the auction. Check Bowling World's full reopening schedule before heading over.

HAPPENINGS

Movie at Tucker Stadium is Tuesday from 8 to 10:30 PM as part of Tennessee Tech's student-focused Week of Welcome. The movie title has not been announced, but the university lists free popcorn and Italian ice. Admission terms are not posted, so students should check the campus schedule before going.

*Two more chances to see All Because of Agatha.* CPAC's suspense-comedy returns Tuesday and Thursday at 7 PM, with the audience seated on the stage close to the action. Tickets are $15 at Cookeville Performing Arts Center, 10 E Broad Street. See the remaining Backstage Series schedule.

Connect with Cookeville brings local businesses to Tennessee Tech's Centennial Plaza on Thursday from 11 AM to 1 PM. Students can learn what is around town and ask about student discounts. The university also plans a Tennessee Tech shirt giveaway at the same place and time while supplies last. See Week of Welcome details.

Sleep Nation closes the Third Thursdays season at Dogwood Performance Pavilion on Thursday from 7:30 to 9 PM. The Nashville alternative-rock duo plays the final concert in the city's free summer series at 43 N Walnut Avenue. No ticket math required, which feels generous this late in August. See the free concert details.

THE LOCAL NOTE: WHEN CAMPUS BECOMES A SMALL CITY AGAIN

Tennessee Tech's fall classes begin Thursday, and the official schedule captures that first-day choreography in small details: an information tent from 8 AM to 3 PM, first-day photos on the Main Quad from 10 AM to noon, and local businesses gathering at Centennial Plaza before lunch.

For a few quiet summer weeks, campus can feel like a collection of brick paths and empty benches. Then the lanyards, questions, and club tables return all at once. Cookeville has changed shifts again. See the university's Week of Welcome schedule.

If this issue helped you find one useful plan, forward it to a bowler, a new Tennessee Tech student, or the friend who still needs a free Thursday night. Know about a restaurant change, campus-community event, fundraiser, or small weekday happening we should catch next? Reply and send the source my way. The best local tips usually arrive before the flyers do.

Thanks for making room for a shifted Tuesday Scoop. I hope these three days bring you one good meal, one good song, or at least fewer gutter balls than last time. Keep it in your lane, more or less. 🧡
